#MangoCrushMonday – Honey Mango

Monday marks #MangoCrushMonday and March is the beginning of Honey mango season, so this week, we’re putting the spotlight on all things golden Honey mangos!

Known in Mexico as the Ataulfo mango, the Honey mango originated in Mexico by grower and namesake Ataulfo Morales Gordillo. Because “Ataulfo” isn’t easy to pronounce this special mango is sometimes called “baby,” “yellow,” and the most popular “honey.” You’re most likely to see them labeled as “Honey mangos” in your local grocery store.

Mexico deemed these mangos so special to their country that the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property has protected the variety, like how Champagne is protected in France. This just means that Champagne made outside of France is technically sparkling wine. And while Honey mangos are also grown in Ecuador and Peru, Mexico claims the variety as their own.

Regardless of origin, the Honey mango is a unique variety when compared to its fruity counterparts.

It tends to be a bit smaller than other mango varieties, but it makes up for it in flavor. Honeys are creamy and sweet with no fibers throughout. They also have a small seed inside, so there’s more mango flesh to enjoy!

If all this Honey talk has got you hankering for the fruit, try it grilled with real honey! Honey grilled fruit with lime-mint vinaigrette combines Honey mango with honey to create a delicious fusion of flavors.
