So Many Mangos to Choose from in June!
You’ve probably eaten the classic round, red mango. Called a Tommy Atkins, this widely available variety is what most Americans think of when they think, “mango.” But did you know there are over 500 different varieties of mango? That’s right! There could be upwards of 2,000 varieties across the world, but there are six kinds that you’re more likely to find in your local supermarket.
June is a great month if you’re wanting to taste test some different mangos. Four of the six varieties are in season with a fifth ripening up for July.
Honey Mangos
Available March through June
These smaller sunshine yellow mangos have a creamy texture with no fibers. When the skin start to wrinkle, that’s when you know it’s ripe and ready to eat!
Francis Mangos
Available April through June
These oblong yellowish green mangos aren’t as widely available in the United States, because they’re only grown in Haiti. If you’re located on the east coast, you might be lucky enough to find some in your supermarket.
Kent Mangos
Available June through August, December through February
One of the sweeter and less fibrous varieties, Kent mangos are always dark green with red blush and yellow undertones. These sweeties break the misconception that a ripe, tasty mango has to be red!
Tommy Atkins
Available March through July, September and October
And last but not least, the Tommy Atkins mango is the kind that Americans typically think of when they hear “mango.” Big, round and red, the Tommies are widely available for most of the year, and you’re best off to give it a squeeze to check if it’s ripe. If it gives a little, you’re good to go.
