Día de los Muertos – A Tribute to Tradition
Día de los Muertos begins next month (November 1-2, 2022) – Discover the beauty and vibrant flavors of what make this tradition so special. This Mexican holiday brings families and friends together as they remember and honor their dearly departed loved ones.
Those who celebrate Día de los Muertos believe that the gates of heaven open and the spirits return to the mortal world. Traditionally, offerings are brought to cemeteries to welcome them. These typically include favorite foods and drinks, which can range from fruits such as mango, drinks, and even a traditional sweet bread called Pan de Muerto
The Day of the Dead is highlighted by the construction of an ofrenda, or a small altar honoring loved ones featuring flowers, candles, food, photos and personal items. For more information on Día de los Muertos and building an ofrenda, watch this short video from Dr. Beatriz Reyes-Foster:
As a fruit with a rich history in Mexico, mangos are perfect for Day of the Dead celebrations. For more ideas on how to include mangos in your Day of the Dead menu, check out some of these traditional, mango-infused Mexican dishes below:
