Your Mango Nutrient: Folate

Did you know that 3/4 cup of mango is a good source of folate and provides 15% of the recommended Daily Value (DV)?

So what is folate, and how is it good for you?

Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that is naturally present in some foods, like mangos! Of course, folate is added to some foods and can also be taken as a dietary supplement. Folate’s synthetic form is known as folic acid.

Folate is most commonly known as a supplement women consume before and during pregnancy. Women who don’t get enough folate are at risk of having babies with neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Folate deficiency can also increase the likelihood of having a premature or low birth weight baby.

Additionally, folate helps the body make red blood cells and DNA. It is often used to help treat anemia – a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells.

People with low blood levels of folate might be more likely to have depression. In addition, they might not respond as well to antidepressant treatment as people with normal folate levels.
