Mangos from Ecuador

Did you know the top banana exporting country is also one of the top mango exporting countries to the United States? The South American country of Ecuador grows four of the most common varieties of mango: Honey, Haden, Kent and Tommy Atkins.

While not as easy to find as other varieties, the Haden mango has an important history. In 1910, the fruiting of this mango in South Florida inspired the creation of a large-scale mango industry, which we can thank for all the mangos we enjoy today. The Florida industry has been greatly reduced by hurricanes, but we can still find Hadens grown in Ecuador.

Besides fruit exportation, Ecuador is known for being located on the equator, the country’s namesake. The equator runs through the entire country, creating a warm, tropical climate – perfect for growing mangos.

Ecuador’s other claim to fame is being the country located closest to outer space. The top of its highest mountain, Mount Chimborazo is the point closest to the sun from Earth due to its location on the equatorial bulge. If you ever wanted to go to space, Mount Chimborazo might be an easier alternative!

Throughout April, you’re likely to find Honey, Haden and Tommy Atkins mangos lining your produce section at your local grocery store with many of those coming from Ecuador – the closest country to space!
