Your Mango Nutrient: Folate
Did you know that one cup of mango is an excellent source of folate and provides 20% of the recommended Daily Value (DV)?
So what is folate, and how is it good for you?
Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that is naturally present in some foods, like mangos! Of course, folate is added to some foods and can also be taken as a dietary supplement. Folate’s synthetic form is known as folic acid.
Folate is most commonly known as supplement women consume before and during pregnancy since it may help reduce a woman's risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord defect.
Additionally, folate helps the body make red blood cells and DNA. It is often used to help treat anemia – a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells.
Folate may also help with depression. People with low blood levels of folate might be more likely to suffer from depression and might not respond as well to treatment with antidepressants as people with normal folate levels.
