Who else enjoys mango?

Human aren’t the only creatures who love mangos! From rodents and birds to primates and insects – tons of animals are enjoying mangos in their own backyards, and sometimes our own.

Many types of birds are known to chow down on mangos. In Australia where mango trees can be in abundance, parrots and lorikeets have been seen blending with the leaves of the trees, while enjoying the sweet fruit.

In the Amazon rainforest, many of the native mammals and birds are herbivores, so they have a hardy diet of fruits, including mangos. The well-camouflaged leaf-katydid insect is known for eating mangos, in addition to other fruits and vegetation found in the rainforest.

Other mango lovers are primates and monkeys. For chimpanzees, figs typically take up nearly 50 percent of their diets, but they are known to eat mangos when they are in season. And monkeys love to eat the flesh, but they also eat the whole mango seed! It’s believed by Ayurvedic healers, an ancient medical system developed in India more than 3,000 years ago, that the mango seed give monkeys the energy and strength to jump tree to tree.

If you live in a warm climate in America, squirrels, raccoons and deer have all been seen eating mangos. Typically, it’s seen more as a nuisance, since backyard mango trees aren’t in abundance here.

With their sweet and delicious flesh, it’s easy to understand why humans aren’t the only ones seeking out this super fruit.
