Mango-Inspired Pattern

We’ve all seen a mango, and we’ve all seen the paisley pattern on handbags, bedding, and more. But did you know that the paisley pattern is based on the shape of a mango? That’s right! The mango’s round shape with a tapered end inspired the pattern in India centuries ago.

Mangos and Paisley Design
We see the resemblance.

In some Indian languages, the name of the pattern is even called mango. In Pakistan, paisley is called a “carrey” design, which means mango seed, and in Punjabi, it’s called an “ambi,” which is derived from the word “amb” meaning mango.

The next time you grab your paisley-printed bag or tie a bandana around your neck, don’t forget about the mango that inspired your colorful garment.
