Selecting and Storing a Mango

Selecting and Storing a Mango

  • Mango Tips

You went to the store, picked out a basket full of mangos and brought them home. Now, how do you tell if the mangos are ready to be eaten? Here are some of our tips and tricks on how to select and store a mango until it is ripe enough to eat.

Tips:

Selecting: Focus on feel, not color. Mangos come in a variety of different colors so you can’t judge a mango  by the peel. Pick up a mango and give it a soft squeeze with your hand. If the mango is slightly squishy, get out the knife and cutting board because it is ready to be enjoyed. Some mangos, like honey mangos, get soft and wrinkly as they ripen.

Storing: If your mango isn’t soft, don’t worry, you can ripen it at home. Leave your mango out in room temperature and it will ripen on its own, like an avocado. You can speed up the ripening process by putting the mango in a brown paper bag and closing the bag. Leave the mango for about two days and it will be riper than before.
