Mango Nutrition Outreach
The National Mango Board is thrilled to kick off 2012 with continuous opportunities to spread nutritional messages about our superfruit, the mango! This year, the NMB partnered with Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) and proudly became a full sponsor for their “Half Your Plate” program. PBH’s mission is to educate consumers on what healthy, balanced and properly portioned meals should look like according to the new US Dietary guidelines which emphasizes fruits and vegetables on half the plate. This partnership is a natural fit because of mangos’ nutritional value, healthfulness and versatility that make it a great option for reaching the ‘Half Your Plate’ goal. As part of their sponsorship, PBH will showcase a mango recipe, Asian Chicken Mango Wraps, and feature it on their consumer website, in education materials such as cookbooks for health professionals and educators, and in several other consumer outreach efforts.
The NMB is also working with a strong Mango Registered Dietician (RD) Network to help add credibility to mango nutrition messages and spread them through various media channels such as television, radio and online. Three experienced media RDs, Tara Gidus, Sylvia Melendez and Michelle Dudash, have been enlisted as media ambassadors obtaining mango nutrition coverage in their markets and nationally. Last but surely not least, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) research results have been accepted for an oral presentation at the Experimental Biology conference in April. Research findings highlight the relationship between the consumption of mangos and nutrient intake and diet quality. The NMB will also be applying to present at the American Dietetic Association annual conference in October.
