Chef Jonathan Bennett Creates Best Mango Dish In Cleveland
The National Mango Board continued the Mango Hometown Tour in Cleveland where local chefs Steve Schimoler of Crop Bistro & Bar and Jonathan Bennett of Moxie, the Restaurant, competed to create a mango dish capturing the city’s local flavor and reflecting innovative seafood dishes. Chef Bennett was named the winner by the panel of three local food experts serving as judges.
Hosted at Moxie, the chefs went toe-to-toe in the kitchen as approximately 75 guests took in the action. Chef Schimoler, known for his fun, inventive culinary creations starring fresh local fare, created a dish he called “Mango Study,” featuring sushi tuna and smoked mango, scallop with grilled mango and and grilled shrimp with mango angel hair. Chef Bennett, who features imaginative New American cuisine with a fresh take on a variety of complex yet simple seafood dishes, served up a mango, cilantro and crab fritter, with mango ketchup, served over green mango slaw.
Judging the event was Elaine Cicora of Cleveland Scene, Hollie Strano of WKYC and BradGillette of Cleveland Food and Brews. After much deliberation, Chef Bennett was declared the winner based on his creative use of mango and how well he captured the seafood theme.
